In the summertime, I always try to incorporate as much fresh basil as possible into my cooking! One of my recent ventures has been making my own pesto with herbs grown in my own backyard! I love being able to pick fresh basil right off my porch, and I especially not having to pay for pricey fresh herbs at the grocery store!
Today I thought I’d combine food and fashion (who doesn’t love that?) and show you my outfit featuring bold stripes and a gorgeous necklace while giving you a great recipe!
My basil plant is absolutely thriving right now! I water it daily or every other day (with this adorable Threshold watering can from target!) and keep it on my back porch-it gets some sun during the day but is shaded in the afternoon. In Alabama where it gets HOT outside in the afternoon, this is ideal. If you’re growing it somewhere milder, you can let it have a little more sun.
Today I decided to make my pesto sauce to go with whole wheat penne, grilled chicken in a white wine garlic herb marinade, and fresh tomatoes!
I got this striped dress from H&M years ago for $12, and it is a classic I never get rid of. Black and white can be accessorized so many ways! I linked a couple of great similar fit and flare striped dresses here and here.

Now for the recipe!
Homemade Basil Pesto
Combine 1/4 cup pine nuts, 3 cloves garlic (less if you don’t like garlic much-I go heavy!), and 2 cups fresh basil leaves in chopper-grind until smooth. Add in 1 cup olive oil and salt and pepper, blend until mixed well.
Boil pasta and grill chicken, combine in a bowl cooked and drained pasta, basil pesto, diced tomatoes, and grilled chicken.
Voila! Delicious, light, and healthy summer dinner!
