Knowing When a Trend Isn’t For You: Why You Won’t See Me in OTK Boots

Knowing When a Trend Isn’t For You: Why You Won’t See Me in OTK Boots

Hey ITC Readers,

Have you ever seen some trend in a magazine, Pinterest, or your favorite blogger’s Instagram account and just loved it? And then have you gone shopping to get said trend for yourself, and realized buying that item would be the worst possible idea?

Because that’s what happened to me this weekend. This fall has been all about Over-the-Knee boots, and I’ve fallen in love with tall suede boots that are tight on the leg and fit right up over the knee over your skinny jeans. What I failed to realize is that my very large, very muscular calves (which I love about myself!) were not going to look good in said boots.

I went to DSW this weekend in search of the the perfect pair of OTK boots. I tried on my first pair, and thought “these aren’t so flattering, but this just isn’t the right pair”. So I tried another. The second pair I could barely get over my calves, and one look in the mirror told me that they were definitely not a good look. Running low on hope, I tried a couple more pairs, just to come to the conclusion that it was me, not the boots.

A less mature version of me from a couple of years ago probably would have picked the pair that looked least horrible and bought them anyways. But I’ve been learning to edit myself. You don’t have to jump on every trend. And you definitely shouldn’t buy something that you don’t love on yourself, just because you love it on someone else.

So, you won’t find me in OTK boots this fall and winter. I’ll stick to my booties and riding boots. And my advice for you is this: don’t be afraid to miss out on a trend that isn’t right for your body or your style. That being said, I’ve linked below some of my favorite OTK boots from DSW, and my hope is that one of you ladies with skinny calves will rock a pair in honor of me!

I have been DYING for a pair! I am off shopping for a bit so I haven’t even tempted myself with trying them on. If they didn’t fit right though I would pass on the trend. It is so important to edit!

I hate when this happens sometimes, because my heart will be so set on an item. Unfortunately, it happens a lot. I’m busty so all of these lace up tops just don’t work for me. Insert crying emoji.

Yes I can totally can relate to this! It can be disappointing at first but then when you find something that is much more flattering you get more excited!

This post is so accurate! Knowing when something is just not flattering on you is so important! We often see trends and go with the trend instead of taking a minute to ask ourselves does this actually look GOOD on ME! Loved this!

omgosh i am so sad you didn’t like them on you!! i agree, you shouldn’t jump on every trend bandwagon…but they do make some pairs specifically for those gifted with more muscular legs in case you change your mind!

    loved these picks!

Totally agree! I have wasted so much money in the past trying to make things work and it’s not worth it! Finding the perfect piece takes more work, but it’s so much more satisfying than settling! Love this post!

What a good post! Definitely true that not every trend is for everyone and it’s okay to find something else that is unique to you and doesn’t have to be following the masses! I absolutely love OTK boots, but riding boots and ankle booties are just as amazing :)! Xoxo- Megan http://www.poshdujour.org

I am so glad to hear you say that not every trend is for everyone. There are any trends that I am not interested in as well. you have certainly linked to some super cute OTK boots!

I totally feel ya!! Sometimes you love a trend but it never works on you. That’s how I felt with off the shoulder pieces.
